As a boy, Mark Newman longed for a closer look at the animals he saw during visits to his family’s cabin in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and on camping trips to Yosemite National Park.  Today, he paints and sculpts in beautiful detail the elusive wild creatures of the forests, fields and mountains.

This design depicts a family of snowshoe rabbits, whose summer coats of tan have turned to white for wintertime.  Thick fur on the bottoms of their feet gives them the ability to dash across the snow – and explains their name.  Future ornaments in this series were portrayed of other animals in natural settings.
